Investors put a record 32,490 crore rupees into systematic investment plans, or SIPs, during September 2026, marking a new all-time high. This amount is 193 crore rupees higher than the August figure of 32,297 crore rupees, which is a growth of about 0.6 percent. This marks the second straight month that total SIP contributions have crossed the 32,000-crore-rupee mark. Data released by the Association of Mutual Funds in India, also known as AMFI, shows that nearly 63 lakh new SIP accounts were registered in September. Total assets managed through SIPs reached 17.86 lakh crore rupees by the end of the month.
Equity and Gold Surge
Equity-oriented mutual funds saw 38,306.55 crore rupees in investments during September, which is roughly 31 percent higher than August. Small-cap funds drew the highest amount at 9,038 crore rupees. Meanwhile, gold exchange-traded funds saw a record net investment of 4,451 crore rupees in September, surging 71.39 percent from August. Silver ETFs also saw increased investments with a net inflow of 1,974.32 crore rupees, up about 55.38 percent from the previous month. Morningstar Investment Research India senior analyst Neha Meshram noted that global tensions, economic worries, and interest rate confusion are driving people toward safe investments.
Industry AUM Changes
Despite the rise in SIPs and equities, the mutual fund industry's total net assets under management dropped by 5.1 percent to 82.64 lakh crore rupees at the end of September, compared to 87.08 lakh crore rupees in August. This drop was mainly driven by heavy withdrawals from debt mutual funds, which recorded a net outflow of 1.83 lakh crore rupees as corporate and institutional investors pulled money out for advance tax payments or quarter-end needs.
Context
Systematic investment plans let people put a fixed amount of money into mutual funds at regular times every month instead of investing a large sum all at once. Gold and silver exchange-traded funds track the domestic price of these precious metals and trade on stock exchanges like regular shares. Institutional withdrawals from debt funds happen regularly at the end of financial quarters and do not reflect retail investor panic.
