A viral seven-day social media checklist promising to lower cortisol has drawn a response from medical experts who say the habits are better viewed as ways to manage stress rather than direct cortisol reducers. Functional health practitioner Ben Azadi shared the checklist on Instagram, recommending that people avoid food three hours before sleeping and get ten minutes of morning sunlight while walking or standing barefoot on grass or dirt. His list also advises eating three meals daily without snacking or alcohol, practising gratitude, finding a healthy stress outlet, and adding laughter or singing.
Medical View
Dr Pranav Ghody, Consultant Endocrinologist and Diabetologist at Wockhardt Hospitals in Mumbai Central, notes that cortisol is not a bad hormone that always needs to be kept as low as possible. Cortisol naturally rises in the morning and drops through the day, while temporary spikes from exercise, illness or stress remain entirely normal. Real medical concerns only arise when high cortisol persists alongside symptoms like unexplained weight gain, muscle weakness, easy bruising, high blood pressure, diabetes or osteoporosis, which can point to Cushing's syndrome. Dr Ghody advises against using random tests or social media routines, suggesting that people focus on consistent sleep, physical activity and stress management instead.
Context
Cortisol is a natural steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands that helps the body respond to stress and regulates metabolism. While lifestyle advice online often targets daily hormone fluctuations, true medical disorders involving cortisol require proper clinical evaluation by a doctor based on physical symptoms rather than internet trends.
