Medical Insights
Dr Prashant Makhija, a consultant neurologist at Wockhardt Hospitals in Mumbai Central, explained that cerebral palsy is a group of neurological conditions affecting movement, muscle control, posture, and balance. The condition stems from damage to or abnormal development of the brain, usually occurring before birth, during delivery, or in early infancy. Dr Makhija noted that the brain injury itself is non-progressive and does not worsen over time, though physical effects can shift as a person grows older. Symptoms and severity vary widely from person to person. Some individuals face mild muscle stiffness, while others deal with major challenges in walking, balance, and daily tasks. The condition can also impact speech, swallowing, and fine motor skills, while occasionally coexisting with epilepsy, vision or hearing issues, or intellectual disabilities.
Management and Independence
A cerebral palsy diagnosis does not mean a person must be entirely dependent on others. Many individuals study, work, and take part actively in society, with independence levels depending on personal needs and mobility. Treatments like physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and assistive devices such as walkers and wheelchairs help improve daily functioning. Early intervention helps children build skills, while adults benefit from regular check-ups to manage pain, fatigue, and joint stiffness.
Context
Cerebral palsy is one of the most common motor disabilities in childhood, resulting from early brain damage that disrupts normal muscle signaling. While the initial injury remains stable throughout a person's life, managing secondary physical challenges requires ongoing medical support and therapy.
