Indian badminton players face hard matches right at the start of the Denmark Open Super 750 tournament which begins tomorrow. PV Sindhu starts her matches against the world number one player An Se-young after reaching the quarterfinal stage at the Arctic Open last week. Sindhu has lost her last ten matches against this top Korean player who comes into the game with recent wins at the World Championships and Asian Games.
Women Singles Draws
Other Indian women players also face tough competition in their opening games. Unnati Hooda plays against Han Qian Xi from China. Tanvi Sharma faces Natsuki Nidaira of Japan. Ashmita Chaliha plays Kaloyana Nalbantova from Bulgaria while Devika Sihag goes up against the eighth seed Pornpawee Chochuwong from Thailand. People will watch Ashmita closely after her recent win at the Korea Open Super 300 tour event and Unnati who played well against Akane Yamaguchi at the Asian Games.
Men Singles Draws
In the men singles matches, Lakshya Sen, Ayush Shetty, and Kidambi Srikanth will take to the court. Lakshya plays against the third seed and World Championships medallist Chou Tien-chen from Chinese Taipei. Ayush meets Alwi Farhan from Indonesia in a rematch after Alwi beat him at the World Championships. Srikanth plays Arnaud Merkle of France at a venue where Srikanth won the title back in 2017.
Doubles Matches
For the doubles games, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty want to recover from an early exit at the Asian Games after winning the China Masters title last month. The fifth seeds open their campaign against He Ji Ting and Ren Xiang Yu from China. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand enter the tournament as top Indian performers over the last three months following their medal at the World Championships and quarterfinal run at the Asian Games. They play against Yan Fei Chen and Hsieh Pei Shan from Chinese Taipei.
Context
Badminton tournaments are organized into different levels based on ranking points and prize money, with Super 750 events drawing nearly all the top players in the world. Early round matches against top seeds often happen when players do not have high enough world rankings to stay protected in the draw. Top players must win multiple rounds against strong opponents to claim these major international titles.
