The Union Health Ministry has asked all States and Union Territories to make sure clinical establishments prominently display the rates they charge for services and facilities. Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava sent a letter to the Chief Secretaries of all States and Union Territories to push for better transparency, accountability, and patient care.
Benefits And Rules
Displaying these rates clearly helps patients and their families understand expected treatment costs, make informed choices, and plan their money better, according to Ms. Srivastava. This step aims to cut down on confusion and arguments over hospital bills. The letter points to the Clinical Establishments Act of 2010 and its 2012 Central Rules, which require registered facilities to show service rates and available options at an easy-to-see spot in both English and the local language.
International Patients
The Health Ministry also wants States and Union Territories to encourage clear display of package rates for foreign patients visiting India on medical or Ayush visas. The Ministry noted this move will help international visitors make smart choices, reduce complaints about pricing, and make India a more trusted hub for medical and Ayush treatment.
Context
Health is a State subject in India, meaning local governments handle the direct regulation of clinical establishments through their own laws where the central Act does not directly apply. The Centre uses guidelines and letters to urge state authorities to enforce existing transparency rules effectively.
