Hyundai has revealed the second-generation Bayon at the Paris Motor Show, transforming the small crossover into a boxier mini-SUV with sharper exterior lines based on its new 'Art of Steel' design language. Eduardo Ramírez, Hyundai's European design chief, told Autocar that the company needed to clearly separate the Bayon from the related i20 hatchback by giving it a more robust character.

Design And Dimensions

The new European-spec Bayon measures 4,245 mm long and 1,810 mm wide, marking a growth of 65 mm in length and 35 mm in width compared to the outgoing model, with a wheelbase of 2,600 mm. Christopher McKinnon, Hyundai Europe's head of product, explained that the vehicle grew in size primarily to accommodate a new full hybrid powertrain by extending the front overhang. Visual upgrades feature top-mounted H-style LED DRLs, trapezoidal headlamp enclosures, a prominent mesh-pattern bonnet, and squared wheel arches, while the sporty N Line variant adds 18-inch alloy wheels, high-gloss black cladding, and dual exhausts.

Cabin And Features

Inside, the European model features a curved panoramic layout with dual 12.3-inch screens borrowed from the larger Ioniq 5, vertically stacked AC vents, and physical buttons for added practicality. Tech additions include wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless phone charging, ventilation and heating for seats, USB-C ports, and an eight-speaker Bose audio system. Cargo capacity reaches 440 litres for the internal combustion engine version and 397 litres for hybrid variants. Meanwhile, the India-bound version, scheduled for launch on 26th October, will feature a 1.5-litre MPi petrol engine producing 115 PS and 144 Nm of torque, paired with a manual or Intelligent Variable Transmission, alongside an NVIDIA-powered Connected Car Navigation Cockpit and an AI voice assistant.

Powertrain Options

European buyers will initially receive a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine delivering either 90 hp or 115 hp, mated to a 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, with higher-tuned variants reaching a top speed of 180 km/h. A full hybrid setup combining a 1.6-litre petrol engine with an electric motor to generate a total output of 136 hp will join the lineup later as a replacement for the older mild-hybrid system. In the UK, deliveries are expected next spring with estimated starting prices around £25,000.

Context

Automakers frequently redesign smaller crossovers to stand out in crowded vehicle segments by adopting bolder, SUV-inspired styling cues and adding electrified powertrains. Expanding interior dimensions allows manufacturers to improve rear passenger comfort and accommodate larger battery components without sacrificing essential cargo space.
