A proposed nationwide network of free online coaching was announced from the Red Fort on August 15, 2026, aimed at removing cost as a barrier to competitive-exam preparation and widening access for students who cannot afford established programmes.
The Need for Coaching
Nearly one in four school students in India takes or has taken private coaching. The Comprehensive Modular Survey: Education 2025, conducted by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, puts the figure at 27% nationally. This rises to 30.7% in urban areas and 25.5% in rural areas. This growing importance of coaching points to a gap between classroom learning in school and what competitive examinations demand.
Quality and Scale
The proposed network aims to combine digital public infrastructure with teachers and educational talent. However, scale alone cannot determine its educational value. Consistent teaching, relevant content, student engagement and measurable learning outcomes will determine whether online access translates into meaningful preparation.
Context
Private coaching has long served as an extra layer of support for students preparing for difficult exams in India. When a large share of students turns to coaching alongside school, it raises questions about whether students feel adequately prepared without it. The longer-term goal of any public education intervention must be strengthening schools so that students build a strong enough foundation to succeed without heavy reliance on a second education system.
