Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman told Hindu community leaders that his government will ensure equal rights and security for every citizen, irrespective of religion. He made the remarks during an exchange of views at the secretariat on Monday, October 12, 2026, according to state-run BSS. Rahman said protecting citizens’ rights is his duty as head of government and that he will make every effort to fulfil it. His comments come amid worries about the safety of religious minorities, especially Hindus, who form about 8% of the population – roughly 13 million people out of nearly 170 million. The police have stepped up security for the upcoming Durga Puja, the largest Hindu festival in Bangladesh, deploying round‑the‑clock surveillance, specialised units, drones and helicopters at almost 33 000 venues. The festival will run from October 16 to 20, 2026. Past incidents of attacks on temples during religious celebrations have heightened calls for stronger protection. Rahman emphasized that his role is to serve all people and protect their rights regardless of faith. ## Context Bangladesh’s Hindu minority, while small, celebrates Durga Puja publicly, making security a recurring concern during the festival season. The government’s public assurances aim to prevent communal violence and reassure the community.
