Real Madrid and Barcelona Football Legends to Play Exhibition Match in Kolkata

Kolkata will host an exhibition match between the legends of Spanish football clubs Barcelona and Real Madrid on November 25. West Bengal sports minister Indranil Khan announced that the game will take place at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan, which is commonly known as the Salt Lake Stadium. The specific players taking part in the upcoming fixture have not been revealed yet.

Background

This announcement follows recent international friendlies at the same Kolkata venue involving the Indian men's football team against Brazil on October 3 and Uruguay on October 6. A similar legends match took place last year at Mumbai's DY Patil Stadium, where Real Madrid legends defeated Barcelona legends in a contest featuring star players like Carlos Puyol, Luís Figo, Fernando Morientes, Pepe, Michael Owen, Javier Saviola, Xavi, and Rivaldo. An earlier attempt to host a legends El Clásico in Mumbai in 2017 was postponed due to player unavailability and eventually cancelled, while another planned Kolkata match was shifted to Mumbai due to logistical issues.

Context

Exhibition matches featuring retired football greats draw large crowds in cities with deep sporting roots like Kolkata. Bringing historic club rivalries to different parts of the world helps grow global fanbases for major European football brands.
