What Happened
Director SS Rajamouli recently spoke on a podcast about his upcoming big project 'Varanasi', which stars Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra in lead roles. Rajamouli explained that he was never fully satisfied with how older Indian mythological films brought epics to the silver screen. He felt those past movies failed to capture the true grandeur and heavy emotional depth found in the original texts. That personal dissatisfaction pushed him to challenge himself by asking what he would do differently, which led directly to the creation of 'Varanasi'.
Movie Details
According to Namasthe Telangana, Mahesh Babu will play two roles in the film as Rudra and Srirama. The movie also features a thirty-minute segment based on the Ramayana. Produced by KL Narayana and Kartikeya under the Sri Durga Arts banner, the pan-India film is scheduled to hit theaters next year on April 7. Rajamouli also shared that making his past movie 'Eega' boosted his personal confidence as a filmmaker, adding that he looks at his career in two parts split by 'Eega' rather than 'Baahubali'.
Context
Major Indian epics like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata have inspired countless cinematic adaptations over the decades across various regional film industries. High-profile director projects in this genre often generate massive public excitement and box-office expectations long before their actual release dates. Filmmakers tackling these ancient stories face the difficult task of balancing traditional source material with modern visual effects and storytelling techniques.
