Seven people have been arrested in connection with the suspected mob lynching of an unidentified man whose body was found near Moolathara Dam in Palakkad. Police uncovered the alleged murder during an investigation into a death that was initially reported as unnatural near the dam. This incident marks the third alleged mob lynching reported in the Palakkad district in recent years.

Details of the Attack

The deceased person had reportedly been roaming around the border village for some time and sleeping near the house of one of the accused in recent days. According to the Meenakshipuram police, the seven suspects are aged between 20 and 25 and were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the attack. The accused claimed the man behaved inappropriately towards women in the household and provoked them, stating they only wanted to drive him away rather than kill him. An altercation followed in which the group allegedly restrained the man and beat him with wooden planks and stones near the dam.

Investigation and Charges

A post-mortem examination conducted at Thrissur Medical College Hospital revealed signs of murder. Police suspect that the victim was suffering from hearing and speaking impairments, though this has not been confirmed yet. Because the man's identity is still unknown, police are currently investigating in neighbouring Tamil Nadu to identify him. Authorities registered an unnatural death case initially, but planned to add more serious charges after presenting the accused before a court.

Context

Mob violence and unauthorized vigilante attacks remain serious concerns for law enforcement across various regions in India. Police investigations into such cases typically rely heavily on medical examinations, local witness testimonies, and forensic evidence to establish the sequence of events and ensure proper legal action against those involved.
