Netflix is laying off roughly 6 percent of its total workforce, which equals close to 1,000 employees. The streaming company confirmed this reduction to media outlets following an internal memo sent out to staff. Most of the job cuts hit the product, technology, legal, and human resources departments. Company leaders stated that Netflix still plans to invest heavily in areas that drive high impact and remains on track to meet its financial goals for the full year. At the end of last year, the streaming giant employed 16,000 full-time workers according to regulatory filings. Co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters wrote in the internal memo that their mission to entertain the world is ambitious and requires careful control over how they use their people and resources. This workforce reduction follows a major bidding battle for the streaming and studio assets of Warner Bros Discovery, which Netflix ultimately lost to Paramount Skydance earlier this year. Netflix had wanted those assets, which include HBO, game divisions, and networks like CNN. The company recently reported $45.2 billion in revenue for 2025, with advertising revenue climbing past $1.5 billion.

Context

Major streaming companies frequently adjust their workforce and strategy as the digital entertainment market faces fierce competition for viewer attention from social media and other platforms. Companies often push into new areas like gaming, live events, and ad-supported subscription tiers to boost revenue and keep subscribers engaged. These business adjustments are common when firms try to balance large financial investments with shifting entertainment trends.
