Jio Platforms has filed its red herring prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Board of India for an initial public offering valued at around 30,200 crore rupees, or about 3.2 billion dollars. The digital services unit of Reliance Industries is offering 270 million new shares at a price band of 1,069 to 1,119 rupees per share, maintaining the exact same share count as originally planned. ## Deal Details And Valuation The revised offer size is about 14% smaller than the 35,000 crore rupees proposed in the draft papers due to a lower price range. This gives the company an equity valuation of just over 10 trillion rupees. An anonymous person involved in the deal stated that the size was reduced after talks with domestic mutual funds to ensure enough growth potential is left on the table in a falling market. Even with this reduction, the share sale will become India's biggest ever in rupee terms, beating Hyundai Motor India's 2024 debut. ## Market Context And Schedule The subscription window opens on October 21 and closes on October 23, with shares scheduled to start trading on October 28. Reliance executives Akash Ambani and Isha Ambani previously led roadshows in the US, UK, Dubai, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Meanwhile, the benchmark Nifty 50 index recently dropped for an eighth straight week amid selling pressure linked to crude oil price spikes and US tariffs. The company intends to use up to 27,500 crore rupees of the proceeds to prepay borrowings of its subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm.

Context

Initial public offerings allow private companies to raise money from public investors by issuing new shares on stock exchanges like the NSE and BSE. Large corporate groups often list their individual business units separately to unlock value and fund capital-heavy expansion plans. Jio Platforms houses major telecom and technology assets, operating in a capital-intensive sector where debt reduction remains a priority.
