Opening Weekend
Movie theater operators are looking to four new releases to improve the October box office. Paramount's video game adaptation "Street Fighter" is expected to lead the pack with an opening between $25 million and $35 million across 3,500 North American theaters, alongside an estimated $35 million from 65 international markets. Disney's survival thriller "Whalefall" aims for second place with $10 million to $12 million from 3,065 venues. A24's Elizabeth Holmes documentary "You Can See Everything" targets $7 million to $8 million from just 800 screens, while Focus Features' remake of "Sense and Sensibility" aims for $5 million to $8 million across 2,436 locations.
Budget And Background
"Street Fighter" carries an $82 million co-finance budget from Legendary and video game developer Capcom, with Paramount handling distribution. The film is directed by Kitao Sakurai, stars Noah Centineo and Andrew Koji, and serves as the third movie based on the Capcom series after the 1994 original and the 2009 follow-up. Meanwhile, the scuba diving thriller "Whalefall" cost $60 million, was directed by Brian Duffield, and stars Austin Abrams. The Elizabeth Holmes documentary cost roughly $7 million to produce, was made by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, and debuted at the Telluride Film Festival. The Jane Austen adaptation "Sense and Sensibility" carries a $25 million budget and stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles as sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood under the direction of the new release's team.
Context
October box office results have varied recently, with some high-profile films struggling while others see modest success. Theater owners typically split ticket sales evenly with film studios, meaning major releases need strong staying power beyond their opening weekend to cover large production budgets.
