Story

Lim Hayeon's debut feature film "Beach Fictions" premiered as a highlight of the main competition at the Busan Film Festival. The South Korean movie follows a young woman named Tae-ju through two diverging versions of the same day, exploring themes of fatalism and self-determination. The 145-minute film is a graduation project produced by the Korean Academy of Film Arts. It features Hansol Park in a breakout lead role alongside Sujeong Ye and Kim Wookyum.

Details

The story opens when Tae-ju faces a painful evening after her friends gossip about her and her casual boyfriend Hyun-jin shows little interest in the relationship. She leaves town for a quiet coastal guesthouse and meets a novelist named Ewha on the train. In the sleepy beach town, Tae-ju meets a charismatic street magician named Manhyuk. Her developing romance with Manhyuk forms the main variable between the film's two timelines, alongside small factors like a water-damaged phone and a psychic's advice. The film's technical crew includes cinematographer Sinuk Park, editor Lim Hayeon, and composer Wonhong Lee.

Context

Debut features from regional festivals often build buzz on the international circuit before finding arthouse distribution. Graduation projects from dedicated film academies frequently serve as launchpads for new directors and actors in the Asian film industry.
