What Happened
The Jammu and Kashmir High Court on Wednesday asked the Union Territory administration to explain the policy that lets political figures keep government accommodation. The case concerns former chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and former BJP J&K president Ravinder Raina. A Division Bench headed by Chief Justice Dr. Pushpendra Bhati and Justice Rajesh Sekhri raised the question after Additional Advocate General Monika Kohli said the issue was placed before a designated committee on August 14, 2026. The committee advised that the allotments should continue, and the competent authority allowed the officials to stay in the residences until March 2027 or until the next review. Ms. Kohli requested more time to file an affidavit and help the court with a uniform policy. The bench scheduled the next hearing for November 12, 2026. In a similar 2022 case, the court had denied protection against eviction for security reasons. Azad served as chief minister from November 2, 2005 to July 11, 2008, while Raina led the BJP's J&K unit from May 13, 2018 to November 3, 2024.
Context
The inquiry highlights how government housing rules for former politicians can become legal matters, especially when no clear policy exists. Such decisions affect how public assets are used after officials leave office.
