Indian stock markets are set to open on a negative note today as the GIFT Nifty trades near the 22,601 level, down nearly ten points from the previous close.

Market Pressures

Asian markets and US stock futures fell following a sharp overnight sell-off on Wall Street. Market sentiment dropped after US consumer prices rose 3.7 percent year-on-year in September, exceeding the 3.6 percent expected by markets and topping August's 3.4 percent figure. This hot inflation reading raised fears that US interest rates will stay high for longer, hurting technology and growth stocks. On Wednesday, the BSE Sensex fell 251.89 points, or 0.34 percent, to close at 72,781.89. The NSE Nifty 50 dropped 99.25 points, or 0.44 percent, to settle at 22,622.70 due to profit booking, rising wholesale inflation, and high crude oil prices.

Global Impacts

Across Asia, South Korean stocks plunged nearly six percent, triggering a temporary trading curb known as a sidecar after foreign investors sold chip shares. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 3.5 percent with heavy losses in tech stocks like Advantest, Tokyo Electron, and SoftBank Group. Taiwan's Taiex index also dropped 2.67 percent, or 1,300 points, in early trade.

Context

Stock markets often react strongly to US inflation reports because changes in American interest rates directly influence how global investors move money between emerging markets like India and developed economies. A stronger dollar and higher US yields typically lead foreign institutional investors to pull funds out of Asian equity markets.
