Photo: Openverse - wikimediaActor Namashi Chakraborty recently shared a harsh experience about losing a role in a big Amazon Prime web series despite nailing his audition. The 34-year-old actor, who is the son of veteran star Mithun Chakraborty, said the director praised his audition at a Mumbai club house called Soho House but admitted that streaming platforms and production houses ultimately control casting decisions.
Casting Realities
A month after the audition, Namashi learned that another actor backed by a big production house and a major talent agency had secured the part instead. He pointed out that both the casting director and the director knew whose son he was, proving that star kids are not immune to last-minute replacements and industry biases. He chose not to sign with a major talent agency after meetings revealed he would be treated as their sixth priority and receive less work than he currently gets on his own merit. He now works as an actor-director under his own banner, MYRND Productions, after starting his film career with Bad Boy in 2023 and gaining attention for his role in The Bengal Files.
Context
Talent agencies and streaming platforms often partner with specific production houses to promote a select group of actors, which can limit opportunities for independent artists. While being related to a well-known star offers initial recognition, industry insiders note that commercial casting decisions on large digital platforms frequently rely on corporate backing and agency representation rather than auditions alone.
