Photo: Openverse - wikimediaThe Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested a Deputy Director-level official of the Serious Fraud Investigation Office and two other people in a corruption case. The arrested men are Harish Kumar Tanwar, an investigating officer at the SFIO office in Chennai, along with an advocate named Bharat Sharma and his relative Aryan Sharma. Mr Tanwar belongs to the 2007 batch of the Indian Revenue Service for Income Tax.
The Arrest
The agency recorded allegations that the accused official and his associates demanded one crore rupees from a complainant. This money was asked in exchange for giving the complainant a favorable outcome in an ongoing SFIO investigation connected to the DHFL scam. After checking the complaint and filing an official First Information Report, the agency set up a trap. The three men were caught after the advocate allegedly took twenty lakh rupees from the complainant as part payment of the total bribe on behalf of the SFIO official.
Context
Anti-corruption agencies frequently use planned traps involving marked currency to catch public servants red-handed while accepting illegal payments. Such investigations aim to target bribery and misuse of official power within government regulatory bodies.
