Swiss tech company Logitech has started making products in India as part of a plan to move some manufacturing away from China. The firm has begun assembling computer mice and webcams at a factory in Manesar, an industrial town in Gurugram.
Manufacturing Strategy
Logitech executive Delphine Donné stated that the shift to India was a natural move to serve the fast-growing local market and reduce shipping times. Chief supply chain operations officer Sree Chenincherry noted that India is the company's seventh manufacturing location worldwide, though he did not name the local contract manufacturing partners involved. The move also helps the company lower the impact of United States import duties.
Local Expansion
Beyond assembly, Logitech runs a research and development centre in Chennai with over 500 staff members working on software, hardware, and data analytics. The company plans to increase its local production volume over time and work with suppliers to meet global quality rules, including the use of recycled plastic materials.
Context
India has pushed to build up its local technology manufacturing sector through government incentives, leading to hundreds of new electronics plants across the country. Major global tech brands often diversify their production bases to manage supply chain risks and draw closer to rapidly growing domestic consumer markets.
