Photo: Openverse - wikimediaSatellite internet provider SpaceX suddenly limited network speeds for high-speed aerial vehicles in Ukraine on Tuesday night. The change capped vehicle velocity at 100mph (160km/h), cutting off internet access for any device exceeding that limit and disrupting military operations. Connectivity returned by Wednesday evening. Ukrainian forces rely heavily on this satellite network to run reconnaissance missions, guide weapons, and coordinate defense against Russian attacks. Jet-powered Shahed aerial weapons flown by opposing forces exceed 198mph (319 km/h), rendering interception efforts nearly impossible while the velocity limits were active. Former US ambassador to Nato Kurt Volker criticized the change, stating that limiting the technology puts lives at risk. George Barros from the Institute for the Study of War noted that the system serves as the primary support structure for military communications across naval, land, and air units.
Context
SpaceX operates a vast constellation of low Earth orbit satellites to deliver high-speed internet globally via portable ground terminals. While built primarily for civilian markets, the company also offers a secure military version called Starshield used by the Pentagon. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has demonstrated how modern military forces increasingly depend on commercial satellite networks for battlefield coordination.
