India Pushes to Turn Chip Design Talent into Global Semiconductor Companies

India aims to turn its deep semiconductor design and engineering talent into global semiconductor enterprises. The country’s engineers already contribute to some of the world’s most advanced chip programmes. The next step, outlined by Shivkumar Kalyanraman, CEO of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) under the Government of India, is to convert that engineering strength into enterprise value. The plan calls for building Indian and India‑based semiconductor firms that invest in research and development within the country. These firms must devise and launch differentiated products, keep the core intellectual property in‑house, and compete at or near the technological frontier. By focusing on R&D, IP ownership and product differentiation, the strategy seeks to create home‑grown players that can stand shoulder‑to‑shoulder with global chip makers.
