Veteran freedom fighter P. Vasu, popularly known as ‘Socio Vasu’, died at his home in Cheruvannur, Kozhikode, on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at the age of 103. He had taken part in the Quit India Movement and led a protest march from Kundaithodu to Cheruvannur, during which British police beat and imprisoned him. After Independence he joined the socialist movement and received party membership from Jayaprakash Narayan in Kozhikode, a link that earned him the nickname ‘Socio Vasu’. In 1951 he turned down an offer of 10 acres of land and ₹2,000 from the Madras Presidency, saying he fought for the country's freedom, not personal gain. During the Emergency he joined a post‑office picket, was again beaten by police and spent nearly a month in hospital. The government recognised his contributions when President K.R. Narayanan felicitated him in New Delhi in 1997. His long life spanned the struggle for independence, the rise of socialist politics and later democratic challenges, leaving a legacy of principled activism.
Context
The Quit India Movement of 1942 was a mass civil‑disobedience campaign demanding an end to British rule, while the Emergency (1975‑77) saw the suspension of civil liberties across India; both periods shaped the political landscape Vasu engaged with.
