What Happened
Mizoram recorded a 51% rise in tourist arrivals between January and August 2026 over the same period in 2025, and the state government has set a goal of 12 lakh visitors by 2030 and 20 lakh by 2047.
Government Plan
The Lalduhoma‑led Zoram People’s Movement government plans to expand community‑based tourism projects as the main growth engine. It has teamed up with Mizoram University to carry out social and economic impact assessments. Since 2023 the state has mobilised nearly ₹680 crore for tourism, including 11 major projects worth ₹608.38 crore such as a ₹250‑crore flagship facilities scheme, the ₹127‑crore PM Ekta Mall, a ₹99.71‑crore conference centre at Thingsulthliah and a ₹34.50‑crore aerial ropeway at Thenzawl‑Buangpui.
Challenges
Tour operators say the 6.7 lakh tourists recorded in the first eight months of 2026 are under 1% of India’s total. The government wants longer stays, visits beyond Aizawl and tourism spend that benefits local businesses. Tourism Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar emphasized child‑safe, women‑safe, and sustainable tourism that protects community, culture and nature.
Context
Mizoram’s push follows a broader trend of northeastern states using community‑led tourism to boost incomes while preserving fragile ecosystems. The state’s focus on 10 culture, adventure and nature circuits linking 40 destinations aims to spread benefits across remote areas.
