US Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal and five other lawmakers wrote to Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday to raise concerns about student protests in India. They asked him to press the Indian government for independent investigations into what they called a pattern of repression and wrongful detention by security forces. The letter also flagged incidents of alleged surveillance and intimidation of individuals on US soil by people linked to the Indian Embassy and consulates. Apart from Jayapal, the letter was signed by James P McGovern, Jesus G 'Chuy' Garcia, Eleanor Holmes Norton, Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib. The lawmakers urged Rubio to bring up these issues during his scheduled visit to India. They questioned the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in India, alleging a lack of transparency and raising concerns over the removal of names from voter lists.

Context

This diplomatic exchange follows earlier remarks by US lawmakers regarding India's voter roll revisions and subsequent rejections by New Delhi. The Ministry of External Affairs previously called such comments unwarranted interference in the electoral practices of a fellow democracy. Lawmakers frequently raise human rights and domestic policy concerns with the State Department ahead of high-level international visits.
