Box Office Numbers

Vijay Deverakonda's new period action drama Ranabaali earned a worldwide opening-day collection of Rs 16.50 crore on Friday. According to the industry tracker Sacnilk, the film collected Rs 9.25 crore net and Rs 10.75 crore gross in India, along with another Rs 5.75 crore from overseas markets. Directed by Rahul Sankrityan, the film is set during the Madras Famine of 1876-78 and explores colonial rule in India. The story features Vijay Deverakonda as the titular character and warrior Ranabaali, Rashmika Mandanna as his wife Jayamma, and Arnold Vosloo as the antagonist Sir Theodore Hector.

Screen Count And Competition

The film had a modest start and ran across 2,515 shows on its first day. A main reason for the lower screen count was direct competition from Jailer 2, which released a day earlier on October 15 and kept a dominant share of screens across South India, especially in the Telugu states. Because of this, Ranabaali opened below Vijay's previous release Kingdom, which had earned Rs 18 crore net across 4,236 shows. However, it earned more than The Family Star, which had a first-day net of Rs 5.75 crore across 3,660 shows. Liger had previously opened to Rs 16 crore net with a worldwide total of Rs 24.20 crore.

Cast And Crew

Ranabaali marks the third collaboration between Vijay Deverakonda and Rahul Sankrityan after Taxiwaala and Shyam Singha Roy. It is also the third on-screen pairing of Vijay and Rashmika Mandanna following Geetha Govindam and Dear Comrade, and their first project together since their wedding in February. The film is produced by Naveen Yerneni and Y. Ravi Shankar under Mythri Movie Makers, and presented by T-Series Films, with music by Ajay-Atul and cinematography by Nirav Shah and Jishnu Bhattacharjee.

Context

Period action dramas set during British colonial rule often explore themes of local resistance against oppression and historical hardships like famines. Box office openings in the Indian film industry are heavily influenced by screen counts and competition from other major releases running in theatres at the same time.
