A moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.1 struck the Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh in the early hours of Saturday, October 17, 2026. Tremors shook the Rampur area for a few seconds around 4:36 a.m., which is located about 130 km from the state capital. The National Centre for Seismology reported that the epicentre lay at a depth of 10 km below the ground.
Impact and Background
The State Disaster Management Authority confirmed that no loss of life or property took place. This event adds to growing worries among residents because earthquakes happen often in the hill state. Himachal Pradesh recorded 67 tremors over the past three years up to August 1, resulting in private property damage worth ₹7.05 lakh. Mild tremors were also felt in Shimla earlier on the morning of August 26.
Context
This region falls inside high-sensitivity seismic zones 4 and 5 due to tectonic activity in the Himalayas. The Bureau of Indian Standards previously proposed a new map placing the entire state into high-risk Zone 6, but the Centre later revoked this change and restored older standards.
