The National Medical Commission has directed all medical colleges and institutions in the country to set up patient safety committees and name nodal officers. This step aims to improve patient safety practices and cut down avoidable harm in hospitals and medical centers.

Committee Details

Under this order, the head of the institution, the director, or the medical superintendent will lead the committee. The group will also include members from different medical fields and patient safety areas. Institutions must send the list of committee members and the details of the safety officer to the National Patient Safety Secretariat at the Directorate-General of Health Services.

Safety Domains and Goal

The safety framework covers 11 main areas. These include safe use of medicines and surgery, safe blood and medical devices, lab test safety, and infection control. Other covered areas are patient and family involvement, safe vaccines and injections, research, and facility safety like fire and waste management. The Commission stated this puts the duty on institutions to monitor safety as a system rather than leaving it to individual doctors.

Context

Patient safety in large hospitals often depends on clear rules and teamwork across different departments. Having a dedicated committee helps spot risks early and stops medical errors before they happen.
