Five landmines were discovered and safely destroyed by the Indian Army along the Line of Control in Poonch district on Saturday. Two of the mines were found by a patrol party near the border fence in the Basoni top area on the morning of October 10, while three more were located in the same zone on the previous day. The explosives were neutralised by the Army’s Bomb Disposal Squad using controlled explosions, and no damage or casualties were reported. The forward zones along the LoC are littered with mines that form part of an anti‑infiltration obstacle system. Heavy rainfall can dislodge these devices, causing them to appear in new locations and pose additional risk. Recent heavy showers in the region increase the chance of mines surfacing, prompting heightened patrols. Authorities monitor the border regularly, especially after monsoon spells, to locate and neutralise any mines that may have shifted. The successful clearance prevents any accidental detonation that could affect nearby villages. ## Context The mining system is intended to deter cross‑border movement, and seasonal rains often shift buried mines, prompting regular clearance operations by the Army.
