The interviews for the fifth selector's position in the Indian cricket team selection committee concluded on Thursday after the Board of Control for Cricket in India cricket advisory committee completed the screening process.

Candidates In The Race

Former Indian cricketers Ramesh Powar and Salil Ankola, along with Wasim Jaffer, applied for the vacant position left after Ajit Agarkar's tenure. Powar played two Tests and 31 ODIs for India, while Ankola played one Test and 20 ODIs. Wasim Jaffer, who is 48 years old, applied for the role and confirmed it to the Press Trust of India, noting he played 31 Tests and scored nearly 2,000 runs. Other candidates interviewed include Jacob Martin and Connor Williams from the Baroda Cricket Association, with Martin playing 10 ODIs and Williams featuring in an unofficial Test against South Africa. The Cricket Advisory Committee includes former Indian cricketers Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjape.

Selection Questions And Issues

During the interviews, candidates faced questions regarding Rohit Sharma's long-term ODI future and the reasons why Vaibhav Suryavanshi has not received opportunities in the T20I playing eleven. Agarkar previously had doubts about Rohit's ability to play until the 2027 ODI World Cup, which created disagreements with the BCCI and led to his term not being extended, despite winning three ICC white-ball trophies including the 2024 T20 World Cup, 2025 Champions Trophy, and 2026 T20 World Cup. Selectors also omitted Yashasvi Jaiswal from the second phase of the ODI series against New Zealand while Shubman Gill is unavailable, preparing Jaiswal for the upcoming Test series, which is seen as a sign of changing selection views regarding Rohit for the World Cup. Candidates were also given a hypothetical scenario about alternative captains if Shubman Gill gets injured.

Chief Selector Prospects

Under BCCI rules, the committee member with the most Test appearances becomes the selection committee chairman. Pragyan Ojha, who played 24 Tests, has been serving as the interim chief selector after working with Agarkar for a year. While Jaffer has played 31 Tests—more than Ojha—reports indicate the BCCI favors continuity in the selection process, though Jaffer's entry has made the race for the chief selector post more competitive.

Context

The BCCI selection committee is responsible for picking national squads across formats based on player performance and fitness. The appointment process involves evaluating former players based on their playing experience in Tests, first-class matches, or ODIs following their retirement from the game.
