Ten Shigella infections were reported in Thrissur district in the first nine days of October, seven of them among attendees of a temple festival in Tholur. The district medical officer, Dr. M. Sujatha, said the source was a well at the temple where water was drawn for rituals, and the well has now been chlorinated. The seven cases from Tholur include a seven‑month‑old child; the remaining three cases came from Wadakkanchery, Arimbur and Adat. All patients have received treatment, most have recovered and the others are also on the mend, according to the DMO. Health teams are monitoring the situation closely and hospitals have been told to act immediately if new cases appear. Awareness campaigns are underway, urging people to seek care promptly if symptoms develop. The Shigella cluster appears amid a broader surge in fever cases: 4,914 people sought treatment for fever between October 1 and 9. During the same period 39 dengue cases and four leptospirosis cases were confirmed. Dengue cases were reported from many localities, including Kodakara, Mattathur, Meloor and the Thrissur corporation area, with most cases linked to migrant labour camps and their contacts. Leptospirosis cases were recorded in Pananchery, Pazhayannur, Porkulam and Kuzhur. The DMO advised anyone with fever to rest, stay hydrated, eat nutritious food and for vulnerable individuals to take extra precautions and seek medical care when needed.
Context
Shigella spreads through contaminated water or food, often in crowded gatherings where hygiene may lapse. Chlorinating water sources is a standard step to stop bacterial transmission. Outbreaks like this highlight the need for regular water quality checks during public events.
