Trade and industry leaders in Karnataka have praised the recent choices made by the GST Council meeting led by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Business Relief

Karnatak Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Sandeep Bidasaria stated that the Council focused well on making legal disputes easier and improving working capital. Keeping tax rates the same and reviewing them once a year will give traders the stability they need. The Council also removed the power of arrest under Section 69 of the CGST Act and raised the prosecution limit from one crore rupees to five crore rupees.

Small Business Support

Small businesses will get relief from disputes because the general penalty drops from 25,000 rupees to 10,000 rupees, and the minimum penalty for a show-cause notice is now 10,000 rupees. Exporters and inverted-duty cases will get an automatic provisional sanction of 90 percent of eligible refunds. Relief on blocked input tax credit for outdoor catering, health and life insurance, telecom towers, and pipelines will cut business costs. Small businesses with a turnover of up to five crore rupees also get a waiver on late fees if they file taxes by the end of the month.

Context

The Goods and Services Tax Council brings together central and state ministers to make decisions on indirect tax rules and rates across India. Business groups often track these meetings closely because tax policy changes directly affect cash flow, legal compliance costs, and day-to-day trade operations.
