Renault India has launched the third-generation Duster, bringing a complete redesign, more features, and an upgraded safety kit to a model that sits alongside the Kwid, Kiger, and Triber in the company lineup.
Powertrains and Performance
The new SUV comes with three distinct engine choices, including two turbo-petrol options and a strong hybrid setup. A 1-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol motor delivers 100 horsepower and 160 Nm of torque, paired exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox. A larger 1.3-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine pushes out 163 horsepower and 280 Nm of torque, available with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Meanwhile, the strong hybrid variant combines a 1.8-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors and a 1.4kWh battery pack. The Atkinson-cycle petrol engine makes 110 horsepower and 175 Nm, while a 50 horsepower traction motor generates 208 Nm on its own, bringing the total combined output to 160 horsepower. This hybrid setup uses a multi-mode automatic gearbox featuring two electric gears and four petrol gears that create an eight-speed combination, delivering an ARAI-certified mileage of 29 kilometres per litre.
Variants and Recommendations
For buyers choosing standard petrol versions, the fully loaded Iconic variant ranges from Rs 16.99 lakh to Rs 18.49 lakh and offers a manual transmission with a top-spec turbo-petrol engine. This automatic version undercuts rival midsize SUVs like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Tata Sierra by up to Rs 2.5 lakh, while its 163hp motor stands as the most powerful in its segment. For those seeking a blend of performance and fuel economy, the hybrid lineup tops out with the Emotion variant. Priced just Rs 50,000 above the Techno trim, the Emotion adds powered and ventilated front seats, a larger driver display, and leatherette upholstery.
Context
The Renault Duster is widely credited with popularizing the modern midsize SUV segment in India when it was first introduced over a decade ago. Bringing in a third-generation model with strong hybrid technology allows the brand to compete directly against modern rivals that have captured market share with advanced features and electrified drivetrains.
