Actor Mahershala Ali grew emotional and wept while talking about the drama film Moonlight during an appearance at a film festival. A festival conversation led by Amon Warmann turned to a memorable scene where a young boy named Chiron asks Juan, the drug dealer character played by Ali, if he sells drugs. Ali stopped talking and wiped away tears when asked why the movie remains so powerful over time. He later explained that the film makes personal stories out of lives that are rarely seen. To prepare for his role as Juan, Ali thought about an older man from his youth who was like an uncle to him and also worked as a substitute teacher. That man went to prison while Ali was in college, which shocked the actor. Ali also spoke about the criticism that surrounded his movie Green Book, where he starred alongside Viggo Mortensen as pianist Don Shirley. Even though that backlash made him feel hurt, he still stands by his work and the lessons he learned from the experience.
Career and Projects
Ali keeps his two Academy Awards hidden away in a cabinet so he can stay focused on working. He provides the voice for Aaron Davis in the animated Spider-Verse movies, but refused to share details about his role in the upcoming sequel to avoid spoiling the plot. He mentioned that voice actors are filmed while working in the recording booth and often add spontaneous lines that change the script. Following Green Book, Ali spent seven months filming True Detective, enduring long shifts that required four hours of daily makeup to play an older detective across three timelines. At the current festival, two of his projects are being shown: the animated movie Wildwood, where he voices a bandit leader named Brendan, and an action thriller titled Your Mother, Your Mother, Your Mother, where he plays a Muslim father who works as a hitman. He is currently filming a new television series named Task alongside Mark Ruffalo.
Context
Mahershala Ali is a well-known American actor who has won two Academy Awards for his supporting performances in films. Film festivals often host public interview sessions where actors discuss their past movies and upcoming projects with interviewers in front of live audiences.
