Amanda Seyfried's Meta Appearance

Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim's documentary "You Can See Everything" features a surprise appearance by actress Amanda Seyfried, who previously won an Emmy for playing Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes in the 2022 series "The Dropout." Fielder introduces the Seyfried twist during the film's second half after Holmes begins her 11-year prison sentence. Fielder recruits Seyfried to help reenact real-life moments that the filmmakers could not capture on camera. Actor Christopher Abbott joins her to play Holmes' boyfriend, Billy Evans, in a smaller role.

The A24 Payment Dispute

Seyfried and Abbott recreate a private negotiation between Fielder, Oppenheim, and the A24 team that took place before filming began. In the scene, Seyfried as Holmes steps away to tend to her child while Abbott as Evans demands financial payment for participating in the documentary. Fielder and Oppenheim push back, arguing that paying the subjects would discredit the film, but A24 ultimately agrees to the payment. Later in prison, Holmes tells Fielder she had no knowledge of the demand, and the movie reveals that Evans eventually dropped his financial request without further explanation.

Clash Over "The Dropout"

During an off-camera prison visit, Seyfried as Holmes confronts Fielder about "The Dropout," complaining that it is awful for women to do that to other women and claiming her fellow inmates believe the series showed real events. Intercut scenes show Seyfried as herself reading the script based on Fielder's actual conversation, defending her work by arguing she did not hurt Holmes and that television is not lies. Fielder questions whether her show was entirely accurate, while Seyfried acknowledges she does not know all the facts but points out that Holmes' own behavior drove the public assumptions.

Context

Elizabeth Holmes was convicted of fraud and conspiracy related to her failed blood-testing startup Theranos, which claimed it could run numerous medical tests from just a few drops of blood. The documentary follows the final 34 days before her prison term began, capturing her life in a rented Del Mar, California cottage with Evans and their two children. The project blurs the line between documentary filmmaking and performance art, utilizing dramatic reenactments to explore how truth and public perception collide.
