Veteran music composer Devanesan Chokkalingam, widely known as Deva, died on Saturday at the age of 75 following a cardiac arrest. According to the Indian Express, he was admitted to a private hospital in Kodambakkam around 8:30 AM and was declared dead shortly after. His son Shrikanth Deva told reporters that his father passed away suddenly. Born on November 20, 1950, Deva was set to turn 76 in just a few weeks.
Career and Legacy
Deva debuted in film composition in 1986 with the Tamil film Maattukara Mannaru and went on to score music for over 400 films across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada cinema. He was best known as the pioneer who brought North Chennai's rustic working-class 'gana' style rhythms into the mainstream of Tamil cinema, earning the moniker 'Thenisai Thendral' from legendary composer M.S. Viswanathan in 1985. In 1992, he began a long-standing collaboration with superstar Rajinikanth by composing the iconic soundtrack for Annamalai, which included Rajinikanth's signature title-card credit that has remained unchanged for over three decades, followed by Baashha and Arunachalam. Between 1995 and 2000, he also composed the breakout albums that helped establish Ajith Kumar and Vijay as leading men in the industry.
Tributes and State Honours
Actor Rajinikanth visited Deva's residence to pay his final respects, appearing visibly emotional before the composer's mortal remains and also sharing a video note to mourn his demise. Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay expressed profound grief, calling Deva's death an irreplaceable loss to Tamil cinema, and announced that the musician's funeral will be held with State honours. Kamal Haasan also remembered the composer as a dear brother. Deva had received numerous awards during his career, including the Kalaimamani title.
Context
Tamil cinema has a long tradition of music directors shaping not just the emotional tone of films but also the specific screen personas of its biggest stars through signature title themes. The passing of Deva marks the end of an era for the distinctive brass-and-percussion heavy 'gana' genre that gave a voice to working-class urban communities on the silver screen.
