Choosing between plant-based and animal-based foods can affect how well you sleep at night. Sonal Chandalia, a clinical nutritionist at Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre in Mumbai, explains how different food types impact rest. Plant-based diets include whole grains, pulses, beans, legumes, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. Fresh food from these sources gives you soluble fibre, complex carbohydrates, protein, and heart-friendly fat to support sleep duration and quality. These foods contribute tryptophan and serotonin precursors, which the body uses to make melatonin, a hormone that regulates the sleep cycle. They are also rich in minerals like potassium and magnesium to regulate muscle movement, along with anti-inflammatory micronutrients. When plant food is easy to digest, it stays light as an evening meal, maintains gut health, and promotes good sleep.
Animal Foods and Digestion
Animal-based foods like eggs, skim milk, and lean meats also provide protein and neurotransmitter precursors that control the sleep cycle. However, people must watch the fat content in animal foods to avoid heavy meals that take a long time to digest. High-protein and high-fat foods add to the digestive load and stop the metabolism from resting, which makes eating such foods early in the evening preferable. Ultimately, the right meal combination determines sleep quality.
Context
Dietary choices play a key role in overall health and daily recovery functions like rest. Nutrition experts often emphasize that digestion speed and nutrient balance are central to how food affects the body at night.
