Rani Abbakka Chowta ruled the coastal kingdom of Ullal in present-day Karnataka during the 16th century and led early resistance against Portuguese colonial expansion.
Background
Belonging to the Tuluvu community, the Chowtas followed a matrilineal tradition where women played key roles in public and private life. Ullal was a rich port near Mangaluru that attracted trade from across the Arabian Sea. Rani Abbakka married Lakshmappa Arasa from the neighbouring Banga kingdom, but the marriage ended and she returned to rule Ullal.
Resistance and Battles
Around the mid-1500s, Portuguese forces led by Admiral Dom Álvaro da Silveira demanded tribute and trade control from the queen, which she refused to protect her people's independence and livelihoods. Around 1568, invaders entered Ullal, but Rani Abbakka escaped, gathered supporters, and launched a surprise counterattack using her local knowledge and military training in archery and horse-riding.
Alliances and Legacy
Her forces and court included Hindus, Muslims, and Jains, and she built alliances with powers like the Zamorin of Calicut. Betrayal eventually led to her capture, and she continued resisting in captivity until her exact fate became uncertain. Today, she is called Abhaya Rani, and her legacy lives on through folk songs, Yakshagana performances, the annual Veera Rani Abbaka Utsava, and a 2009 Indian Coast Guard patrol vessel named after her.
Context
Stories of early regional rulers who fought European maritime powers highlight how coastal kingdoms defended their trade routes long before larger, unified freedom movements took shape across the Indian subcontinent. Local folklore and cultural traditions often serve to preserve the memory of historical figures whose detailed written records might otherwise be scarce.
