India’s Information & Broadcasting Secretary Chanchal Kumar on Thursday urged the media and entertainment sector to move beyond sheer scale and prioritize original intellectual property, sustainable business models and global market reach. Speaking at the inaugural session of the Confederation of Indian Industry’s two‑day Big Picture Summit 2026, he said the industry should position India as a leading source of creative content, technology and talent and as home to globally competitive media companies. Kumar linked the summit’s theme, ‘The New Economics of Media and Entertainment: Building India’s Future Global Media Companies’, to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s WAVES 2025 vision of ‘Create in India, Create for the World’, highlighting the need for innovation and trust. He also stressed a robust anti‑piracy framework to protect creativity and intellectual property. During the summit, CII released a white paper outlining a roadmap for the sector to reach $100 billion by the early 2030s, calling for faster reforms, stronger regional markets and measurable implementation. Kumar inaugurated the WAVES ‘Global Investor and Investee Meet’, bringing together more than 150 investors and investees and linking about 20 participants from WaveX and WAVES Bazaar. ## Context The push aligns with India’s broader aim to turn its rich storytelling heritage into economic value and to compete with global media hubs by strengthening domestic production and protecting rights.
