Actor Selma Blair's representatives have released a detailed statement defending her after her arrest on October 11 following a violent incident aboard a Delta flight from Los Angeles to New York. The 54-year-old actor allegedly became physically abusive toward two cabin crew members, kicked a Port Authority officer in the head while heading to a hospital, and allegedly assaulted a nurse upon arrival. According to air traffic communications, the pilot asked the tower for medical help to treat bite marks and a bloody nose, though ambulances were not needed.
Defence
Blair's representatives stated that she suffered a medical emergency on the flight and did not try to harm anyone, also denying that she attempted to open the aircraft door. They stated that she has multiple sclerosis, a chronic autoimmune disease, along with pseudobulbar affect, a neurological condition secondary to her MS that affects how medical episodes appear to strangers. Her team added that she travels with a service dog that authorities allegedly took from her. The statement noted that the public version of events relied on a police statement and a decade-old headline from a 2016 incident where Blair yelled on a flight after mixing alcohol with medication.
Legal Status
Blair pleaded not guilty on October 12 to two counts of assault on state charges involving the officer and the nurse, and a judge issued a protective order for them. She is free on bail with her next court date set for January, and a federal law enforcement official stated that the FBI also issued her a notice charging her with assault for her actions on the plane. BBC Entertainment reported that she had never been arrested prior to this incident.
Context
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic condition affecting the central nervous system, and secondary conditions like pseudobulbar affect can cause sudden, involuntary emotional outbursts that do not match a person's actual feelings. Public figures facing legal issues often release detailed statements through representatives to address media reports and shape public perception ahead of court appearances.
