Second-hand smoke from a nearby cigarette poses serious health risks even to people who do not smoke.

Health Dangers

Cigarette smoke contains over 7,000 chemicals, including dozens known to cause cancer. Dr Ashwin Rajbhoj, a cancer physician at MOC Cancer Care in Pune, points out that lungs and blood vessels do not tell the difference between a smoker's cigarette and smoke in the air. Dr Sewanti Limaye, director of medical and precision oncology at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, adds that there is no safe level of exposure to second-hand smoke. Repeated exposure links to lung cancer, heart disease, and stroke. Even short-term exposure harms blood vessels and causes breathing changes.

Vulnerable Groups

Children, pregnant women, and people with existing heart or lung diseases face higher risks from tobacco smoke. In children, exposure can worsen asthma, cause respiratory infections, and slow lung development. Dr Rajbhoj advises keeping homes and cars smoke-free, moving away from active smokers, and avoiding the belief that open windows make exposure harmless.

Context

Second-hand smoke consists of a mix of smoke from a burning cigarette and smoke breathed out by a smoker. Medical experts view passive smoking as an environmental health hazard that prevents proper cancer care by exposing non-smokers to harmful carcinogens.
