Injury Update
Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez says he will be fit in a few weeks after undergoing surgery following a head collision in a 2-0 Premier League win at Everton. The 34-year-old Argentina international suffered the injury during the second half at Hill Dickinson Stadium after a clash with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall whipped a free kick into the box. Martinez needed eight minutes of treatment on the pitch before being strapped to a stretcher, taken to hospital, and diagnosed with a concussion.
Replacement Keeper
Following the injury, 21-year-old Mike Penders made his Premier League debut as a substitute. Penders, signed from Belgian club Genk, looks set to play in Chelsea's next three matches at least, which include fixtures against Tottenham and Manchester United in the league, alongside a Carabao Cup tie at Liverpool. Chelsea coach Xabi Alonso praised the young goalkeeper, stating that he has personality and bravery, and that the team has full trust in him.
Context
Goalkeeper injuries require careful medical protocols, particularly with head knocks and concussions that mandate specific periods away from training. Squad depth becomes essential for top football clubs when key players face extended spells on the sidelines during a busy fixture list.
