The Mathilakam grama panchayat has opened its 11th‑year swimming training camp, extending a decade‑long effort that has taught nearly 1,500 locals to swim and handle water safely. The camp began on October 15 at Polakkulam and will run daily until October 25, with sessions from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. Children from Class V onward and residents older than ten are invited to join. Nesiya M. Shahib, the Station House Officer of Mathilakam police, inaugurated the program, while Panchayat president Sumathi Sundaran presided over the ceremony. The initiative seeks to turn swimming from a leisure activity into a basic life skill for the entire community. By offering structured lessons locally, the panchayat hopes to boost water confidence and spread safety awareness among all ages. The drive began as a modest effort to combat water‑related accidents and has grown into a model scheme for nearby villages. Organisers stress that the goal is complete water literacy, meaning every resident can stay afloat and help others in emergencies.
Context
In rural Kerala, many households live near rivers and ponds, making basic swimming ability crucial for daily life and disaster preparedness. Community‑run programs like Mathilakam’s provide affordable training that government services often lack, helping to reduce drownings in the region.
