The crater measures about 728 feet (222 metres) across, making it larger than the Roman Colosseum. It was caused by an asteroid roughly the size of a six‑storey building that slammed into the lunar surface. The feature was spotted by NASA's Moon orbiter during routine imaging. Scientists say such a fresh, large crater appears only once in a hundred years.
