More than 70 major Friday congregations across Kashmir, Jammu, and Ladakh delivered sermons on the common theme of faith on October 16 in a collective religious initiative. The Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema, a conglomerate of Muslim bodies headed by Kashmir chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, announced the feat on October 17.

Community Impact

The MMU described the effort as an expression of unity across different schools of thought. Congregations came together voluntarily to share a message on faith while keeping the independence of every pulpit intact. The joint sermons focused on individual character, family life, and moral values, urging worshippers to practice honesty and humanity instead of compromising for worldly gain.

Future Plans

The initiative follows a September 15 Ulema Conference held in Srinagar. The MMU plans to use future Fridays to address topics such as community unity, drug abuse, suicide prevention, mental health, youth challenges, social media use, family values, and environmental protection.

Context

Religious bodies often use Friday prayer gatherings to guide public opinion and address social issues affecting local communities. This coordinated effort marks a rare instance of various religious groups aligning their weekly messages across a wide region.
