Artificial intelligence giant Anthropic plans to commit 5% of its shares to a new fund that will make donations for the public good. The announcement arrives as the company lays the ground for a potential stock market listing that could value the firm at more than $1 trillion.
Fund Details
According to a statement released on Sunday by the Claude developer, the public benefit fund could also receive another 2% of the firm's shares at its board's discretion. TechCrunch reports that the fund is structured as a wholly-owned entity within the company to give it increased flexibility and scale. Anthropic noted that the fund could support traditional nonprofit organisations and efforts to address AI's impact on the jobs market, noting that bolder approaches may be needed given the pace of AI progress. TechCrunch adds that Anthropic has already committed $200 million to study job market impacts. None of the shares held by the fund would be used for lobbying or political donations in the US or overseas.
Reactions and Financials
Technology billionaire Elon Musk responded to the news on social media by recommending that the shares be given directly to the public, adding that this is what he will be doing. The move comes as the AI industry faces intense scrutiny over safety concerns, with Anthropic reportedly stating in its initial public offering filing that AI could pose catastrophic or existential risks to humanity. CEO Dario Amodei has described this negative public sentiment as fundamentally a crisis of trust. Last week, Anthropic told prospective investors that its revenue surged by 45% to $16.8 billion in the three months to the end of September. Meanwhile, research by the International Monetary Fund published in 2024 suggested that almost 40% of jobs around the world will be affected by AI, with that figure rising as high as 60% in advanced economies.
Context
Tech companies often set up special funds or foundations ahead of a major stock market launch to address social concerns and regulatory questions. As artificial intelligence systems become more powerful, large developers face mounting pressure from the public and governments to prove their technology benefits society rather than just driving profits.
