An MBA student was arrested at the Vijayawada railway station with MDMA worth 11 lakh rupees on October 14. Government Railway Police and EAGLE personnel caught Yerramsetti Naga Sowmya after she arrived on the Bengaluru-Howrah Express.
Investigation Details
Sowmya is a native of Patamata in Vijayawada. Police sources stated she got the banned drugs from a Nigerian national named Andol Noel in Yelahanka, Bengaluru. She collected 110 grams of MDMA and planned to hand it over to a drug handler named Sheik Basheer. Investigators found that she took a commission of 50,000 rupees from Basheer for smuggling the contraband.
Police Action
Sowmya's boyfriend, Venkata Sai Vardhan, is currently in jail as an accused in a similar drug case. Authorities have seized the mobile phones belonging to both Sowmya and Basheer. Police are now trying to trace other suppliers and clients by checking the social media accounts used by the suspects.
Context
Drug trafficking networks often use young people or students as couriers to move illegal substances between cities like Bengaluru and Vijayawada. Law enforcement agencies track these interstate routes using train checks and intelligence gathered from seized phones.
