One person died and several were injured after communal clashes broke out in Thoubal district, Manipur. The violence started when a crowd allegedly hurled stones at a ground in Khangabok village during a night‑time concert on Sunday. The stone‑throwing spread between members of two communities in Khangabok and the nearby Sangaiyumpham area. A few houses and vehicles were set on fire in the two villages. Unidentified gunmen shot a man in the head; he was taken to a local hospital where he later died. Police identified the deceased as Laishram Rakesh. Others received minor cuts from the stones and were also admitted for treatment. State and central security forces were deployed to the scene and the situation was reported as under control by Monday morning. District authorities issued prohibitory orders that barred residents from leaving their homes in Khangabok and Sangaiyumpham. The order, effective from 11 pm on Sunday, cited the risk of a breach of peace, disturbance of public tranquillity and danger to life and property. It was issued under a provision of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita that allows temporary restrictions to prevent urgent threats. The order did not state an end time for the restriction.

Context

Manipur has seen repeated inter‑community tensions, and the use of emergency powers aims to prevent small incidents from turning into wider unrest.
