Renault has entered the strong-hybrid SUV segment with the Duster E-Tech 160, competing directly against the established Maruti Victoris. A comparison of their top-spec variants, the Emotion and ZXi+ (O), reveals distinct differences in size, powertrain, and pricing.

Dimensions and Cabin Space

Apart from length, where the Victoris measures 4,360mm against the Duster's 4,346mm, the Renault outranks its rival across every other dimension. The Duster is 20mm wider at 1,815mm, 39mm taller at 1,694mm, and features a 57mm longer wheelbase at 2,657mm. It also rides slightly higher with 212mm of ground clearance and offers 372 litres of boot space compared to the Victoris's estimated under-300-litre capacity.

Powertrain and Performance

Both SUVs pair a naturally aspirated petrol engine running on the Atkinson cycle with an electric motor. However, the Duster utilizes a larger 1,789cc four-cylinder engine delivering 110hp and 175Nm of torque, alongside a 1.4 kWh battery pack. The Victoris employs a smaller 1,490cc engine producing 92hp and 122Nm, paired with a 0.76 kWh battery. While the Maruti e-motor outputs 80hp compared to the Renault motor's 50hp, the Duster delivers superior electric torque at 208Nm against 141Nm. Combined system output reaches 160hp for the Duster and 116hp for the Victoris. For transmission, the Duster uses a multi-mode automatic gearbox with two electric and four petrol gears, while the Victoris features an e-CVT. Renault claims a fuel efficiency of 29 kpl for the Duster, noting it runs 80 percent on EV power in the city.

Features and Safety

On the exterior, both models share LED headlamps, DRLs, roof rails, shark fin antennas, and powered tailgates, but the Duster uniquely features 18-inch wheels, puddle lamps, and welcome lighting animations. Inside, the Renault offers a powered co-driver seat and dual-zone climate control, while the Victoris provides eight-way driver seat adjustment, on-board navigation, and two extra speakers. Safety features common to both include six airbags, rear parking sensors, an electronic parking brake with auto-hold, all-wheel disc brakes, and a tire pressure monitoring system. The Victoris adds a 360-degree camera and front parking sensors, while both models omit Level 2 ADAS.

Pricing and Verdict

Priced at Rs 19.49 lakh for the top-spec Emotion trim, the strong-hybrid Renault Duster undercuts the top-spec Maruti Victoris ZXi+ (O), which costs Rs 19.98 lakh, by Rs 41,000.

Context

Strong-hybrid vehicles combine a traditional internal combustion engine with an electric motor and battery pack to significantly improve fuel efficiency without requiring external plug-in charging. This powertrain setup automatically switches between petrol and electric power, making it particularly suited for stop-and-go urban traffic conditions.
