Technology billionaire Elon Musk announced plans to give one share of his space company SpaceX to every child in the United States next year. Musk shared this update on his social media platform X, stating it will be the first of several similar offerings.
Details and Scale
SpaceX is an American aerospace manufacturer and space transportation provider founded by Musk. A Business Insider report estimates that distributing one share to every child in the US would cover roughly 72 million people. Based on the current share price, the total stock value would be about $10.5 billion. However, Musk has not yet explained the exact share structure for this giveaway. Meanwhile, SpaceX COO and President Gwynne Shotwell has pledged a personal donation of $320 million in SpaceX stock for over 2 million children.
Wider Context
Musk's announcement follows the US administration's Trump Accounts initiative, which provides eligible children with investment accounts. In a separate development, AI firm Anthropic announced it will commit 5 percent of its shares to a public good fund ahead of a potential stock market debut. Responding to that move, Musk wrote that he recommends giving shares directly to the public instead.
Context
SpaceX operates major space programs and the Starlink satellite internet service, making it one of the most prominent private aerospace companies in the world. Announcements involving large corporate stock distributions to the public are rare and often spark widespread public interest regarding how such complex transfers will be legally and operationally executed.
